What to Do With Space Under Your Stairs

If you have stairs in your home, you probably have some empty space under the stairs that need to be filled. If you are not sure what to do with this space, you may be surprised at the answers below. This space has so much potential and it can completely turn your room around by simply decorating under the stairs. Most older homes would box it in to make a coat or storage closet however you can make it so much more today.

A Place To Escape

If you want a place that you can go to where everyone can still find you but no one will think to look there, then under the stairs can make a cozy retreat.

It is the perfect under the stairs seating. You can make it look much like you would a window seat except you will need to add artificial lighting. You can

Have someone build your bench or you can make it yourself. You can place a cushion in the color that best coordinates with the rest of the room. You can make the bench seat also open up for storage so you can store extra pillows, blankets, and more.

On the walls, you could add a simple yet old fashioned looking wall lamp that can be moved around from side to side so you can adjust the lighting while you read a book. You want this light to be bright but not so over-powering. Keep the walls simple. The less space you clutter up the better off your decor will be when you are decorating tiny spaces like these. Place a basket on the floor in front of the bench seat for books or magazines. You will also want to place a small area rug in front of the bench. Cotton rugs would be best or round braided rugs. These rugs will complete this look and set the place to escape separated from the rest of the home.

Cabinet Storage

Who couldn’t use more cabinet space? Usually stairs are near the front door and when everyone walks in they usually throw down their books or other items thinking that they will pick them up when the come back down. This may become a problem if you have more than one person in the house. You need the extra storage space so that everyone can put away before they go upstairs. You can design the storage space to fit anyway you like it. There are open shelves, closed shelves, and drawers that can open to give you as much space as you need.

Playhouse

If your child needs a little place to play consider making the most of your under the stair space by putting in a small play room. You can place a child’s size table and chairs, a toy box, a place to read, and more. You can place all her toys and coloring supplies in baskets and crates to help accent the room. When building in the wall, you can add a tiny square window from the door to give her more light while she plays. A small square braided rug would work well.
