INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to both sizes.
Note: Ch 2 at beg of rnd does not count as st. Beg at top of crown, with MC, ch 4. Join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 2. 8 hdc in ring. Join with sl st to first hdc.
2nd rnd: Ch 2. 2 hdc in same sp as last sl st. 2 hdc in each hdc around. Join with sl st to first hdc. 16 hdc.
3rd rnd: Ch 2. 2 hdc in same sp as last sl st. *1 hdc in next hdc. 2 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * to last hdc. 1 hdc in last hdc. Join with sl st to first hdc. 24 hdc.
4th rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same sp as last sl st. *2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * to last hdc. 2 hdc in last hdc. Join with sl st to first hdc. 36 hdc.
5th rnd: Ch 2. 2 hdc in same sp as last sl st. *1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc. 2 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * to last 2 hdc. 1 hdc
in each of last 2 hdc. Join with sl st to first hdc. 48 hdc.
6th rnd: Ch 2. 2 hdc in same sp as last sl st. *1 hdc in each of next 3 (2) hdc. 2 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * to last 3 (2) hdc. 1 hdc in each of last 3 (2) hdc. Join with sl st to first hdc. 60 (64) hdc.
Note: When working bobbles, cut 24″ [61 cm] lengths of contrast color for each bobble, leaving approx 3″ [7.5 cm] ends at beg and end of each bobble which will be secured to WS of work during finishing. To change color before bobble, work to last loops on hook of previous hdc, draw color of bobble through last loops and proceed.
Size 18 mos/2 yrs only: 7th rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same sp as last sl st. 1 hdc in next hdc. *With B, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. With D, bobble in next hdc.** With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. With A, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. With C, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. 8th and 9th rnds: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to first hdc.
10th rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same sp as last sl st. 1 hdc in each of next 4 hdc. *With A, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. With C, bobble in next hdc.** With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. With D, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. With B, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. Rep from * to last 7 hdc, then rep from * to **. Join MC with sl st to first hdc.
11th and 12th rnds: As 8th and 9th rnds. Rep 7th to 11th rnds once more. Fasten off.
Size 4 yrs only: 7th rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same sp as last sl st. 1 hdc in next hdc. *With B, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 7 hdc. With D, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 7 hdc. With A, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 7 hdc. With C, bobble in next hdc.** With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 7 hdc. Rep from * to last 30 hdc, then rep from * to **. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. Join with sl st to first hdc.
8th and 9th rnds: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to first hdc.
10th rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same sp as last sl st. 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. *With A, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 7 hdc. With C, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 7 hdc. With D, bobble in next hdc. With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 7 hdc. With B, bobble in next hdc.** With MC, 1 hdc in each of next 7 hdc. Rep from * to last 26 hdc, then rep from * to **. With MC, 1 hdc in last hdc. Join with sl st to first hdc.
11th and 12th rnds: As 8th and 9th rnds. Rep 7th to 12th rnds once more, then rep 7th and 8th rnds once. Fasten off.
Both sizes: Earflaps: Place markers on 7th hdc on each side of center back (joining hdc), leaving 12 hdc unworked at center
back.
First Earflap: 1st row: (RS). Join MC with sl st in marked hdc. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. 1 sc in each of next 14 (15) sts. Turn. 15 (16) sc.
2nd to 8th rows: Ch 1. Working in back loops only, 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
9th row: Ch 1. Working in back loops only, sc2tog. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Sc2tog. Turn. 13 (14) sts.
10th and 11th rows: As 2nd row.
12th to 14th rows: As 9th row. 7 (8) sts at end of 14th row. Fasten off.
Second Earflap: 1st row: (RS). Miss next 18 (20) hdc of Hat. Join MC with sl st in next hdc. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. 1 sc in each of next 14 (15) sts to marker. Turn. 15 (16) sc.
2nd to 14th rows: Work as for First Earflap.
Edging and Ties: With RS facing, join MC with sl st at center back. Ch 1. Work sc evenly around edge of Hat to center of final row of First Earflap. Ch 66 for Tie. Turn ch on its side and sl st back into each horizontal ‘bump’ to beg of ch (see diagrams). Sl st in same sp as last sc worked along Earflap to secure Tie, then cont working sc evenly around edge of Hat
to center of final row of Second Earflap. Make 2nd Tie in same manner, then sc evenly around edge of Hat to end. Join
with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
